The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team won its first OUA road test tonight, defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-2.
Lakeheads Matt Caria opened the scoring with only 30 seconds remaining in the first period on a goal assisted by Adam Sergerie and Trevor Gamache.
Ottawa tied the game up midway through the second stanza when Alexandre Touchette caught Lakehead goaltender Alex Dupuis a little bit out of position and put the puck in the net. Later in the period, Trevor Gamache blocked a shot at the Lakehead blue line and stormed down the ice with Sergerie. Using Sergerie as a decoy, Gamache beat Ottawa netminder Russel Abbot stick-side to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Lakehead increased its lead to 3-1 early in the third period on a goal by Sergerie, with Gamache and Mitch Maunu collecting the assists. Ottawa responded when Matt White cut the lead to 3-2 midway through the final frame, putting some pressure on the Wolves. But Sergerie recorded his second goal of the game with less than two minutes remaining in the contest to make it a 4-2 final in favor of the Wolves. Gamache and Caria were awarded the assists on the goal, giving Gamache four points on the night, with Segerie totaling three points and Caria two.
Lakehead outshot Ottawa 31-26 for the game.
The two teams will take to the ice again tomorrow night, with the opening face-off at 7:00 PM.
