The Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team earned their first regular season sweep of the season as they skated to a 6-3 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks late Saturday afternoon in Oshawa, Ontario.
The win comes after the Wolves 5-1 win Friday night against the Ridgebacks. Lakehead goes to 6-3-1 OUA and 8-5-1 overall while UOIT is now 2-4-1 in OUA action and 4-9-1 overall.
Brock McPherson led the Wolves with a pair of goals while Drew Kivell and Richard Molenaar picked up their first goals of the season. Tobias Whelan got his third goal of the weekend and the other Lakehead marker was notched by Scott Dobben; who also added an assist. Molenaar also added a helper and Mark Soares and Ryan Baird had a pair of assists each.
Nathan Spaling had a good game for the Ridgebacks with a goal and two assists while the other UOIT goals came from Josh Vatri and Mike Noyes.
Chris Whitley put in a solid effort for the Wolves between the pipes and raised his OUA record to 4-1. Ridgebacks netminder Matt Mateja (2-4) again played a good game despite allowing six goals; as he made a lot of good stops on the day.
Shots on goal were 27-23 in favour of Lakehead. The wolves were 1-4 on the powerplay while UOIT was 1-5.
Lakehead returns home next weekend for some home cooking as they host the Lions for a two-game series at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.
