The CIS No. 4 Lakehead Thunderwolves men's hockey were handed their first regulation loss of the season as they were defeated 3-2 by the No. 10 Waterloo Warriors, Friday night at the Columbia Icefields Arena at Waterloo, Ontario.
Lakehead had several opportunities to put the Warriors away as they entered the third period leading 2-0 after a first period goal from Brock McPherson and a second period marker by Dan Speer. The Warriors stormed back in the final frame with goals by Mark Hartman and Kyle Pellerin before notching the game winner at 12:08 when Kirt Hill tallied shorthanded.
Keaton Hartigan got the win in goal for the Warriors with 30 saves while Lakehead's Kyle Moir was handed his first loss after stopping 17 shots. Both teams struggled on the powerplay, going scoreless with six man advantages apiece.
With the loss, the Thunderwolves drop to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in OUA play while the Warriors improve to 7-3-0 overall in 5-1-1 in the OUA.
The Thunderwolves will have a chance to split the series, Saturday night, as they close their double-header at the Columbia Icefields Arena.
