The CIS No. 5 Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team opened the second half of the OUA regular season with a hard-earned 1-0 win over the Queens Gaels Friday night at the Memorial Arena in Kingston, Ontario.
Lakeheads lone goal came from a long shot by Andrew Brown at 8:42 of the second; assisted by Dan Speer and Brock McPherson.
Queens outshot Lakehead 38-35 in the game and Lakehead netminder Chris Whitley earned the shutout. Whitley had to be sharp in the final period as the Gaels pushed hard to tie the game and Whitley turned aside 16 Queens shots in the third. Queens freshmen netminder Brady Morrison also played another good game for the Gaels; turning aside 34 Lakehead shots.
Lakehead goes to 12-3-2 in OUA play (18-6-2 overall); while Queens goes to 6-10-2 in OUA play (8-13-2 overall).
It was a hard-hitting but clean game as Lakehead was 0-2 on the powerplay while Queens was 0-4 with the man advantage.
