Wolves earn sweep with blowout win over Lancers

Lakehead opened with four straight goals and closed with another four goal run to beat the Windsor Lancers 8-2, Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens at Thunder Bay, Ontario. The win gives the Wolves a two-game sweep of Windsor and improves their record to 13-5-2, moving them into third place in the OUA West. The Lancers drop to 7-10-3 and are in a three-way tied with Brock and UOIT for seventh place.

Shandor Alphonso led the way with two goals with six others also scoring for the Thunderwolves, including Dan Speer who added two assists for a three-point night. Kyle Lang and Kyle Tront scored for the Lancers.

Ryan McDonald scored the lone first period goal at 12:35 on assists from Andrew Wilkins and Kris Hogg. The Wolves continued to apply offensive pressure against Lancer netminder Jim Watt in the second frame with Dan Speer scoring on the powerplay at the 58 second mark. Hogg made it 3-0, scoring a shorthanded marker from Wilkins at 3:56 with Soares adding an unassisted goal less than two minutes later.

Windsor made things interested with two consecutive goals later in the period. First, Lang tucked home a powerplay tally on feeds from Matt McCready and Jon Sciacca before Tront scored at 14:58, assisted by Scott Gillis.

Alphonso responded for Lakehead with nine seconds left in the second before scoring again at the 4:53 mark of the third period. Matt Dias added a late powerplay goal from the doorstep with Andy Hyvarinen capping the games offence in the final minute.

Kyle Moir was solid in net for LU, earning the win with 36 saves while Watt struggled, stopping just 33 of 41 shots.

Lakehead takes on Brock next Friday and Saturday at St. Catharines, Ontario.
