The Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team rebounded from a Friday loss to earn a series split with the Laurier Golden Hawks as the Wolves recorded a 3-0 shutout in Waterloo on Saturday night.
The Thunderwolves played well from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer and controlled play for most of the game. Lakehead outshot Laurier 49-25 on the night.
Lakeheads scoring came from Jeff Richards with a pair and Mike Wehrstedt with a single. Peter Cava notched two assists. Chris Whitley was between the pipes for the Wolves to record his first shutout of the OUA season. Richards had a very feisty game; knocking in the two goals as well as collecting 16 minutes in penalties.
Lakehead Head Coach Pete Belliveau said his team worked very hard. We went from the worst game of the year to the best game of the year in 24 hours. We stuck to the game plan from start to finish and played very well.
The win puts Lakeheads OUA record at 3-3 (7-6-2 overall) while the Hawks are 3-2-1 in OUA play and 7-5-1 overall. Lakehead sees action next weekend when it hosts the York Lions at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.
