The CIS No. 5 Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team skated to an 8-0 home win over the Ryerson Rams Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Lakeheads regular season mark goes to 14-3-1-1 in OUA record (20-6-1-1 overall); while Ryersons record goes to 4-14 in OUA play (6-18 overall).
Lakehead netminder and last years OUA MVP Chris Whitley (7-1) earned his second consecutive shutout for the Wolves (and third of the season) and made a couple big stops to preserve the shutout. Brett Gibson (2-11) took the loss for the Rams; allowing 6 goals while Louis George came in relief in the third period and played very well for the Rams; making a number of excellent saves while allowing two goals. Lakehead outshot Ryerson 51-23 on the night.
Lakehead was led offensively by freshman defenceman Bryan Wilson who scored two goals. Captain Andrew Brown and defending OUA Scoring Champion Dan Speer each added a goal and two assists. Brock McPherson had a goal and an assist while single Lakehead markers came from Mark Soares, Arron Alphonso, and Richard Molenaar.
Lakehead was 2-9 on the powerplay while the Wolves PK unit was very solid; stopping Ryerson on all five of their man advantages.
