With the win, Lakehead goes to 1-0 on the year and improves its all-time record against the Gryphons to 14-3-2. Guelph drops to 0-2 this season.

Thomas Kiriakou led Guelphs offense with two goals while Matt Lyall added the Gryphons other marker. Fourth-year veteran Derek Knowles assisted on all three of Guelphs goals. Guelph opened the scoring at 2:30 of the first period when first-year center Lyall of Richmond Hill, Ontario found the back of the net on a three-on-two chance. McPherson added his second of the night on a two-man advantage when he capitalized on a cross crease feed from Speer at 12:33. Andy Zulyniak added the second assist.

Lakehead continued their attack in the second period when Ryan Baird was left all alone in front of the Gryphons net and out-waited Couture to score his first of the year at 3:35. Speer got the assist after making a nifty spin move alone the boards and firing a quick pass through traffic.

Baird gave the Wolves some quick third period offense, scoring on a point shot 45 seconds into the final frame.

That was as close as Guelph got, however, as Hogg scored his first of the night on a slap shot at 12:12 and then closed the scoring less than three minutes later with a beautiful shorthanded goal at 15:05.
