The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Ottawa this weekend with a 3-1 win over the Gee-Gees Saturday night at the University of Ottawa Sports Complex Arena.
Freshman netminder Jeff Bosch played a strong game in net for Lakehead turning aside 32 of 33 shots, and Junior Andrew Wilkins scored two goals to lead the Wolves to victory.
Wilkins opened the scoring just 1:49 into the opening period on a powerplay marker assisted by Mike Quesnele and Mitch Fillman. Lakehead increased its lead to 2-0 when Matt Caria made no mistake in finding the back of net after being awarded a penalty shot at the 4:14 mark.
Ottawas Dominic Jalbert scored the Gee-Gees lone goal of the night at 13:42 of the first period, to narrow the Wolves lead to 2-1 heading into the second period.
Wilkins notched his second marker of the game on a short-handed goal at 13:01 of the middle stanza. Assists on Wilkins goal were once again credited to Quesnele and Fillman.
There was no scoring in the third period, one which Lakehead wisely played close to the vest, giving the Wolves a 3-1 win and an important weekend sweep at Ottawa.
Lakehead will be on the road again next weekend to take on the York Lions. Fridays game will be played on the York campus, but the Saturday game will shift to Orillia, Ontario, home of Lakehead Universitys satellite campus.
