When the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Hockey players hit the ice on Friday night, fans will notice something different. The Wolves will play in unique jerseys promoting colon cancer awareness that will be auctioned off in support of the Northern Cancer Fund.

The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game. Winning bidders will receive the signed jerseys on the ice after the game and can have their picture taken with the players.

This is the sixth year that the Wolves have auctioned specially-designed jerseys to raise funds for the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, as well as raise awareness of the importance of cancer prevention.

The Early Bird Screening ColonCancerCheck Photo Station will be at the Lakehead Thunderwolves vs Waterloo Warriors hockey game on Friday, February 1. Come to watch some exciting hockey and learn more about colorectal screening, and if youre 50 years or older you can enter to win an iPad after making your pledge.

The Early Bird Screening ColonCancerCheck Photo Station encourages men and women age 50 and over to talk to their healthcare provider about the Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), which is a simple, take-home test that screens for colorectal cancer, says Alison McMullen, Director of Prevention and Screening Services. With high rates of colorectal cancer in Northwestern Ontario, it is crucial for people to know that when found early, colorectal cancer can be 90 per cent curable.

Thunderwolves Hockey enjoys finding ways to give back to the community and to support healthy initiatives like colorectal screening, says Rory Cava, President of Lakehead Thunderwolves Varsity Hockey. We believe in taking care of our bodies and we encourage all people over 50 to take the few minutes needed to complete the FOBT test. Really, it could save your life.
