
The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team will hit the road for the second weekend in a row for a pair of games versus the York Lions. The first game will go Friday night at 7:00 PM at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena on the York campus, and the Saturday game will be played at the Lakehead satellite campus in Orillia with an 8:00 PM start time. Both games can be heard live on Rock 94.3 FM.
Last Time Out
The Thunderwolves are coming off an impressive weekend sweep of the Ottawa Gee-Gees by scores of 4-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. The Friday win was highlighted by sophomore Trevor Gamaches 4-point effort, and Saturdays victory was keyed by a pair of goals by junior Andrew Wilkins and strong goaltending by freshman Jeff Bosch.
York spent last weekend in Kingston, Ontario, where it earned two points in a pair of shootout losses to RMC and Queens. The Lions lost by scores of 4-3 at RMC on Friday, followed by a 3-2 defeat to Queens on Saturday.
Series History
Lakehead has an all-time record 25-10 versus York. The two teams met four times last season, with both squads recording two wins each. Lakehead won the first meeting in York 5-2 on a Friday in late October. The next night the teams played on the Lakehead campus in Orillia, where the Lions shut out the Wolves 3-0.
York visited Lakehead in early February of 2011, and the Lions defeated the Wolves 4-2 on the Friday, with Lakehead rebounding for a 7-6 overtime win in the Saturday game.
About the Lions
York is an extremely young team, with a total of 18 freshmen on the roster. Of the Lions returning players, forwards Chad Hohmann, Mackenzie Micks, and Jesse Messier are ones to watch; as well as defenceman Matt Thomson.
The Lions currently sit in third place in the OUA West Division with a 1-0-3 record, good for 5 points just 1 point ahead of the Thunderwolves 2-2-0 record.
