The Lakehead Thunderwolves training camp continued Wednesday night with a spirited East vs. West scrimmage game that saw Team East defeat Team West 9-3. The squads, split into which part of Canada the players were born in, put on a spirited display for about 300 fans who turned up at the Tournament Centre.
Senior netminder Chris Whitley was sharp in goal for Team East and didnt let a puck past him; while freshman goalie Kyle Moir had a tough night in goal for Team West; allowing all nine goals.
Senior centre Tobias Whelan, Lakeheads regular season leading scorer and OUA First Team All Star, also looked very good and centred a strong line with wingers Nathan Breukelman and Andrew Brown.
Freshmen defensemen Pierre-Marc Guillbault, Jordan Smith, and Steve Kaplonas also played well for Team East as did forwards Brock McPherson (sophomore) and Curtis Sandberg (freshman).
For Team West; heralded freshmen forward Kris Hogg has a slot start but played very well in the third period along with fellow freshman Devin Welsh.
Two players dropped out of the training camp; former Thunderwolves player Jeff Adduono (to concentrate on his studies) and freshman Joey Nigro.
Head Coach Don Mckee and his staff now have the difficult job of making cuts as the Wolves work towards their final roster; a challenging task with the many talented players still in camp fighting for spots on the team.
