As the Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team continues its road to the Cavendish University Cup in late March, the OUA recognized three of the teams top competitors for their stellar regular season contributions, Thursday afternoon. Fifth-year senior forward Scott Dobben (Drayton, Ontario) was named a West Division second team all-star while senior winger Mark Soares (Burnaby, British Columbia) was honoured as the most sportsmanlike player, and big Victor Anilane (Gothenburg, Sweden) took a spot on the all-rookie team.
On a stacked Wolves roster Dobben was the alpha male in 2009-10 after assembling one of the most well-rounded and consistent seasons in program history. Lakeheads top faceoff man, the kinesiology student tied Brock McPherson for the Thunderwolves lead with 14 goals and was second in scoring with 31 points. A two-year assistant captain, Dobbens exploits on special teams have been impressive as he tallied six times on the powerplay and logged big minutes on the penalty kill.
Speedy Mark Soares is no stranger to the OUA West awards scene having won rookie of the year in 2006-07 and been named a second team all-star in 2007-08. The commerce student performed at a high level again this season with 11 goals and 11 assists while playing poised and sportsmanlike hockey having been whistled down for only four penalty minutes in conference play.
Swedish import Anilane, once a final cut for his countrys world junior team has been an impact player on both ends of the ice for the Wolves. One of the conferences best players at storming the crease, Anilane scored10 goals with 12 assists on the year and was named CIS male athlete of the week on October 28 in Lakeheads two-game sweep of the Brock Badgers.
I am very excited to see three Thunderwolves recognized by the OUA for their outstanding seasons, said Thunderwolves head coach Joel Scherban. Scott has been one of the top players in the OUA all season. In addition to his offensive production he is one of the top defensive players in the league. Mark his one of the hardest workers in the OUA. He plays the game at a very high level, provides leadership and is a great role model due to his hockey ability and sportsmanship. Victor stepped into the OUA and made an immediate impact. We look forward to Victor continuing his development at Lakehead University.
