The Manitoba Bisons put on an impressive display as they defeated the CIS No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks 6-3 in Day 3 action at the TBaytel Varsity Cup Tournament Monday afternoon in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The Bisons skated hard throughout the game and had the speedy Hawks backpedaling for much of the game. Manitobas powerplay has been on fire at the Varsity Cup tourney; and it stayed red hot again Monday with the Bisons going 4-12 while Laurier was 0-10 with the man advantage.
Greg Beller led the Bisons with 2 goals and an assist while Mike Hellyer and Rick Wood had a goal and an assist each. Single tallies came from Ryley Dudar and Kyle Howarth. Calin Wild added two assists for Manitoba. Jean-Michel Rizk, Curtis Pettapiece, and Luke Dubbin scored for Laurier. Nathan Peacock had a pair of assists for the Hawks.
Steve Christie notched the win for the Bisons; stopping 19 Laurier shots while Mike Thomson recorded the loss; turning aside 23 Manitoba shots.
Laurier came out fast in the first and entered the intermission with a 1-0 lead but the Manitoba powerplay came alive in the second and the Bisons went into the second intermission with a 5-1 lead. Laurier had a number of powerplay chances in the third and got two goals back but the Bisons speed and strong checking carried the play for most of the final frame to get the win.

Manitoba, defending tourney champions, finish this years Varsity Cup with 3 points while Laurier ends with 2 points.
The night game of the TBaytel Varsity Cup features No. 3 Saskatchewan taking on No. 7 Lakehead. The game will serve as a preview of Tuesday nights tourney final which will go at 7:30 pm EST.
