Fifth-year senior forward Kelin Ainsworth (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was recognized twice at the Lakehead University Athletics awards ceremony held at the law school auditorium on Saturday afternoon.
Ainsworth (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was chosen as the hockey teams most valuable player as well as the Wolves best offensive player.
Patrick Murphy (St. Catharines, Ontario) was selected as the teams top freshman. Other award winners for hockey went to sophomore defenceman Dillon Donnelly (Dorval, Quebec) for best defensive player and fifth-year senior forward Carson Dubchak (Kenora, Ontario) for best work ethic.
Top Freshman: Patrick Murphy
Patrick improved the Wolves scoring punch from the back end and was the teams top scoring blue-liner with 5 goals and 12 assists for a total of 17 points. He finished second in scoring among all OUA West Division freshman defencemen and was named to the OUA West All-Freshman team.
Best Offensive Player: Kelin Ainsworth
Kelin played in all 36 games this season and led the Wolves in scoring with 13 goals and 26 assists for a total of 39 points.
Best Defensive Player: Dillon Donnelly
Dillon transferred from St. Thomas University and made an immediate impact in improving the Wolves overall defensive unit. His defensive zone coverage is particularly strong and he moves the puck out of his own end very well. Dylan was chosen as the LU Athlete of the Month for November.
Best Work Ethic: Carson Dubchak
Carson finished second in team scoring with 30 points, and repeatedly came up with big plays at crucial times throughout the season. He competes hard and plays every game with passion, skill and intensity, and consistently performed at a high level for five years.
Most Valuable Player: Kelin Ainsworth
In addition to leading the team in total scoring, Kelin played a major role on special teams by leading the team in power play goals with 4. He also recorded 4 short-handed goals and finished tied for second place in the OUA in that category. Kelin won the Molson Cup for collecting the most Three Stars of the Game points awarded for outstanding play after home games, and was also named the LU Athlete of the month last October.
