The Lakehead Thunderwolves held on to defeat the Ryerson Rams 3-2 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in downtown Toronto Saturday afternoon.

Lakehead started out quickly when Kelin Ainsworth scored just 2:11 into the game by knocking home a rebound set up by Austin McDonald and Matt Kaarela.

Brennen Dubchak made it 2-0 for the Wolves with a blast from the top of the face-off circle that seemed to surprise Rams’ goalie Troy Passingham.  Brennen’s brother Carson Dubchak and E.J. Faust picked up the assists.

Shots on goal in the first period were 9 aside.

The brother combination worked for the Wolves again midway through the second period when Mike Quesnele scored after receiving a feed from David Quesnele and Carson Dubchak to give Lakehead a 3-0 lead.

Robert Visca got the Rams on the board when shoveled a rebound past Wolves’ netminder Justin McDonald just over a minute later.

Lakehead outshot Ryerson 13-9 in the middle frame, one in which both goalies were forced to come up with some big stops.

Ryerson narrowed the lead to 3-2 just 4:42 in the third period when Visca scored his second goal of the game by pouncing on another rebound after Justin McDonald made the initial save.

Despite applying a lot of pressure in the final minutes of the game, the Rams couldn’t get anything past McDonald, who played very well in both games this weekend.

Ryerson outshot Lakehead 15-8 in the period and 33-30 for the game.

It was the third win in a row for the Thunderwolves, who will return home to host the OUA West Division leading and defending Queen’s Cup champion Windsor Lancers at the Fort William Gardens next weekend.
