The Lakehead Thunderwolves completed the series sweep with a 4-1 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs at the Countryside Arena in Sudbury, Ontario on Friday night.

Cody Alcock led the way for the Wolves with two goals, and Lakehead goaltender Justin McDonald held Laurentian to just one goal for the second night in a row.

Lakehead’s Chris De la Lande gave the Wolves an early 1-0 lead 6:47 into the first period on a goal set up by the Quesnele brothers, Mike and David.  Less than a minute later, Paul Thompson fed Alcock who beat Laurentian netminder Charlie Millen, and the Wolves took a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

The Thunderwolves controlled the play in the opening frame, outshooting the Voyageurs 16-3.

Mike Hammond extended the Lakehead lead to 3-0 when he scored the only goal of the middle stanza at the 8:52 mark, with assists credited to Jake Carrick and Kelin Ainsworth.

Both teams played the second period much closer to the vest, and with very little offense created on either side, Laurentian barely outshot Lakehead by a 5-4 margin.

Laurentian’s Brandon Howes broke McDonald’s shutout bid just 26 seconds into the third period and narrowed the Wolves’ lead to 3-1.

Lakehead defenceman Nathan Bruyere left the game early when he received a ten-minute misconduct penalty for checking from behind at 11:06 into the period.

Laurentian pulled its goalie for an extra attacker late in the game, but Mike Quesnele fed Alcock who broke in alone and put the puck into the empty net for his second marker of the night, sealing the 4-1 win for the Wolves.

The Voyageurs edged Lakehead 7-4 in shots in the final frame, but the Wolves held the advantage over Laurentian for the game by a 24-15 margin.

The win improves Lakehead’s OUA record to 7-1, and keeps the Thunderwolves in a first-place tie with Windsor in the West Division.

The Wolves return to the Fort William Gardens to take on the Concordia Stingers next Friday and Saturday night for the last home games before the Christmas exam break.  Game time is set for 7:30 on both nights, and Friday is the annual LU Alumni teddy bear toss game.
