John Payetta
Friday, October 29, 2010Three powerplay goals by the Thunderwolves helped propel Lakehead to a 5-2 victory over the York Lions Friday night at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena.  The win improves Lakehead’s OUA record to 4-2-1, and moves the Wolves into second place in the West division behind the Western Ontario Mustangs.

Lakehead struck early when Ryan McDonald got the Wolves first powerplay goal of the night at 3:26 of the first period, with assists going to Matt Caria and Mike Quesnele.  Caria made the score 2-0 with another powerplay marker at 15:11, with Quesnele picking up another assist.  Shots on goal in the first period were 9-7 for York.

McDonald notched his second goal of the game at 2:10 of the second period, giving the Thunderwolves a 3-0 lead.  Quesnele collected his third assist of the night on that goal, with the other helper going to Adam Segerie.  York got on the board at 15:21 when Jesse Messier put one past Lakehead goaltender Alex Dupuis, narrowing the gap to 3-1.  But the Wolves answered with their third powerplay goal of the game when Adam Sergerie found the twine at 17:25 to put the Lakehead up 4-1.  Assists on the goal went to Brock McPherson and Andy Zulyniak.  Dupuis was busy in the Wolves’ net, as York outshot Lakehead 17-9 for the period.

York got on the scoreboard for the second time when MacKenzie Micks scored at 16:38 of the third period.  Lakehead quickly replied once again, on an unassisted marker by Trevor Gamache at 18:05 to close out the scoring and seal the 5-2 victory for the Thunderwolves.  York outshot Lakehead 10-7 on the period and 36-23 for the game, but Dupuis was solid in goal, picking up his third win in a row.

Game two of the series will be played Saturday night about 80 miles north of York on Lakehead’s satellite campus in Orillia, although the Lions are still officially the home team for the contest.  The opening face-off is set for 7:30 p.m., and will be broadcast live on Rock 94.3 fm.
