Their offensive talent was never in doubt, but the CIS No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team appear to have gotten their defensive play on track as they shutout the RMC Paladins, 6-0, Friday night at the Constantine Arena in Kingston, Ontario. Junior Kyle Moir made 22 saves for the his second shutout of the season, one game after holding the Toronto Varsity Blues to one goal last Saturday at home.

With the win, the Wolves improve to 9-3-1 in conference play and maintain their second place position in the OUA West Division, one point back of the Western Mustangs. The Paladins drop to 3-6-3 and remain tied with Ottawa for eighth in the East Division.

Six players scored for Lakehead, including Pierre-Marc Guilbault whose first period powerplay goal held up as the winner. With eight goals on the year, Guilbault leads all OUA blueliners, easily outscoring Windsor’s Matt McCready and Guelph’s Jon Thomas MacDonald who have five apiece.

Mark Soares, Scott Dobben, Shandor Alphonso, Brock McPherson and Victor Anilane also scored for a Wolves’ team that outshot the Paladins 45-22. McPherson added two assists for a three point night while Dan Speer had a great game with three helpers.

“It was a long day for us, taking longer than we expected to get to Kingston,” said Thunderwolves head coach Joel Scherban. “We’re happy with how we play and felt we put in a pretty good all-around effort.”
