11/6/2009: LAURIER - 4 @ LAKEHEAD - 10

Mike Bennett
Saturday, November 07, 2009Rebounding from two road losses at Waterloo last weekend, the Lakehead Thunderwolves won a rollercoaster 10-4 game over the visiting CIS No. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.
Blueliner Pierre-Marc Guilbault had a monster game with two goals to lead the Thunderwolves while Kris Hogg had a four-point night with one goal and three assists. Eight other Lakehead players scored on the night, with Adam Sergerie playing well in a setup role with three assists.
Paul Bradley was the top Hawk on the night, scoring a goal and adding an assist while Jason Bergeron, Ryan Bellows and Ryan Bernardi also scored for the the visitors.
After Lakehead built a 4-2 first period lead, on goals from Victor Anilane, Shandor Alphonso, Kalvin Sagert and Mark Soares, things took a controversial turn as Adam Sergerie had what appeared to be a goal disallowed. As the play continued, Laurier flew past the hosts on the counter-attack, pulling within one as Bernardi tallied.
It was all Lakehead from there on as the team scored four second period goals, including powerplay markers from Hogg, Maunu, and Guilbault to go up 8-4 after forty minutes. LU closed the scoring with two goals in the final frame including Arron Alphonso's first of the year, and Guilbault's second powerplay tally.
Tempers flared between the two teams during the very physical second and third periods. In all, Lakehead had nine powerplay opportunities in the game, scoring on four of them, while Laurier when 1-8 with the man advantage.
The antics continued after the final whistle as Laurier head coach Kelly Nobes argued with the head referee on the ice after the game, later waiting outside the officials' dressing room to continue airing his grievances. Nobes received a game misconduct for his actions.
The rivalry between these OUA West rivals continues Saturday night, 7:30 at the Fort William Gardens.
