The CIS No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team battled to a hard-fought 6-4 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Lakehead goes to 10-3-2 in OUA play (12-5-2 overall) while Guelph’s record goes to 7-10-1 in OUA play (8-12-1-1 overall).

The Wolves built a 3-0 lead halfway through the second period but the Gryphons fought back to tie the game.  Lakehead scored late in the period to head into the intermission with a 4-3 lead but Guelph scored quickly in the third to tie the game again.  However, Lakehead scored two more to put the game away.

Lakehead was led offensively by Brock McPherson with a goal and two assists and Kris Hogg with a goal and an assist.  Lakehead’s also got goals from Andy Zulyniak and Kalvin Sagert while captain Andrew Brown and freshman Adam Sergerie picked up their first goals of the regular season.  Dan Speer also had a good night with 3 assists.

Zach Lillie led the Gryphons with a goal and 2 assists while single markers came from Thomas LaPlante, Derek Knowles, and David Volpe.

Lakehead sophomore goalie Kyle Moir (7-2-2) picked up his third consecutive win while Adam Arklie (2-6) took the loss for Guelph.  Lakehead outshot Guelph 37-27 in the game.   The Wolves were deadly on special teams Friday; going 4-8 on the powerplay and also notching one shorthanded goal.  The Wolves penalty kill was also very strong; only allowing one Guelph goal on 10 powerplay opportunities.

The two teams face off again Saturday night at 7:30 pm EST at the Fort William Gardens and the game will be videowebcast live on a pay per view basis with ordering information available at http://events.news-cast.com/events/Lakehead   Rock 94 FM Sports Director Bryan Wyatt will be calling the play by play and Argus Sports Editor Mike St. Jean will be handling the colour, pre-game and intermission duties.  Fans will need hi speed internet and Windows Media Player to watch the broadcasts.
