10/17/2008: LAKEHEAD - 5 @ WATERLOO - 7

The Waterloo Warriors skated to a wild 7-5 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday night in Waterloo, Ontario.  Waterloo built up a 4-0 lead by early in the second period and had the Wolves reeling but Lakehead then mounted an impressive comeback and scored four goals of their own to tie the score heading into the third.  However, the Warriors notched three in the third to put the game away.

Lakehead freshman Andy Hyvarinen had an impressive game with three goals, with singles coming from Scott Dobben and Kris Hogg.

Waterloo had a very balanced attack with David Edgeworth and Mark Hartman each notching a pair.  Jordan Brenner had a goal and two assists while single markers came from Sean Moir and Kurt Thorner.

Chris Whitley’s two-season regular season undefeated streak of 16 games came to an end as he recorded the loss and allowed 7 goals on the night; way above his average.

However Lakehead’s defense did not support Whitley well and has to come into question on the night as it’s been a long time since a team scored seven goals on the Wolves.  Aaron Barton recorded the win in goal for Waterloo.  Shots on goal were 31-26 Lakehead.

Lakehead was 0-3 on the powerplay while Waterloo was 1-4.  Lakehead now has a 1-2 OUA record and are 3-4 overall; while Waterloo is 1-2 in OUA play and 2-3 overall.

The two teams face off again Saturday night at the Columbia Icefields Arena in Waterloo.  Saturday’s game can be heard live on Rock94 FM in Thunder Bay and on the internet at  Bryan Wyatt will be handling the play by play duties.  Broadcasts begin at 7:15 pm EST with faceoff at 7:30 both nights.
