Lakehead’s season ended with a 3-1 loss to York at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Toronto on Saturday night as the Thunderwolves were swept by the Lions in two straight games in the first round of the playoffs.
York’s Dexter Bricker scored the only goal of the first period when he beat Wolves’ netminder Devin Green at the 16:52 mark to put York up by one after 20 minutes.
Scott Feser converted on a Lions’ power play just 52 seconds into the middle stanza to increase York’s lead to 2-0.
Lakehead had back-to-back power play opportunities in the early part of the period, but were unable to generate much offense on either attempt.
Aaron Spivak fired a hard wrister from the face-off circle to put the Lions up 3-0 with a little over four minutes to go in the second, giving York a comfortable lead heading into the third period.
Carson Dubchak broke Lions’ goalie Mack Shields’ shutout bid with a one-timer off a cross-crease pass from Kelin Ainsworth while the Wolves held the man-advantage at 5:17 of the final frame, with Billy Jenkins getting the second helper.
Lakehead pulled Green for an extra attacker with over two minutes remaining in the game, but were unable to get anything else past Shields and York held on for the win.
Total shots on goal in the game were 37-28 in favor of the Lions.
On the night, Lakehead was 1-for-5 on the power play, while York went 1-for-4.
